The Diocesan team in charge of leading the “Extraordinary Missionary Year” has prepared a document with some of the initiatives being proposed. The text is constantly updated as this is an ongoing process
THE “EXTRAORDINARY MISSION YEAR” (EMY)
OCTOBER 2019 – OCTOBER 2020
The Extraordinary Mission Year will begin officially in all our parishes on Mission Sunday 20 October 2019. However, prior to Mission Sunday, a night vigil to be organized at the Cathedral (6pm – 6am) on Friday 18 October 2019 during which various themes will be addressed.
Common activities during the Extraordinary Mission Year
Missionary Light/Candle
From the theme of the Missionary year ‘Baptised and Sent’, we propose that there be a Missionary Light/Candle something similar to what the youth did with the ‘Cross’ visiting our parishes and outstations.
Through the diocesan youth chaplain, youths from various parishes designed a candle, whose details include the map of Swaziland and the names of the parishes within the diocese.
These designs were then presented to the working committee who chose the best designed candle that will then be used as the missionary candle for 2019/2020. The youth group whose design was chosen won E 500.
The diocesan missionary candle will be lit on the day we officially open the missionary year. All the parishes will light their parish candles from the diocesan candle. The parishes will then take home their candles and keep them lit throughout the year of mission.
The diocesan candle will journey from parish to parish. When the diocesan candle is brought to a parish, the parish candle should be taken to the outstations.
The diocesan candle will stay in a parish for a period of three weeks. Each parish will arrange how to receive the candle from the previous parish and how to hand it over to the next parish.
During the closing of the year of mission, the diocesan candle will be officially blown out by the bishop.
The journey of the missionary candle will take the geographical location of the parishes and not the years of their establishment.
